the IHS is recommending hearing aid dispensers not to break the HIPAA law. free audio exams are fully covered by the law and refusing to provide the audiogram to the patient is breaking the law. they advise the dispenser to stop giving free exams except with a purchase or add a statement that says the audiogram is the property of the dispenser and is not intended to be used by others. the article explains this does not allow the dispenser to refuse to give the free audiogram to the customer but it protects the dispenser from law suits based on a bad fitting of another using the audiogram to fit.
