Thread: What to Try Next

  1. Default What to Try Next

My mom has trouble hearing the TV. So first I tried hearing aids. They fixed the problem - she can hear - but she doesn't want to wear them.

Next we tried an over the hear headset with a broadcast base. It worked perfectly. She could hear. The audio came through with 0 lag. The headphones hurt her ears. Returned.

Next we tried a bluetooth transmitter and bluetooth earbuds. No more pain, but the lag makes TV unwatchable.

What else can I try? I'm getting dizzy going back and forth, setting things up, returning things.

I replied to you on the other thread so I'll repeat here.

Many modern TVs have audio delay settings to sync up the video with the audio. That may fix your earbud lag issue.

Or try out the TV Ears on her. Costco and Amazon sell them for easy return.

She has to want to hear. The best option is the HAs if they helped as you said. You need to figure out why she does not want to wear them and work on that problem - cosmetic issues? - discomfort? - thinks they signify aging? - difficult to handle? There are lots of possible reasons.

TV's let you set the audio to lag. In other words, they can delay the audio. If the audio is already delayed, that setting doesn't help.

On a computer video viewer, you can often set the image/video to lag. That would slow it down to match the already lagged audio.

I am going to try the TV ears.

She won't wear the HA's because she doesn't want people to know she is wearing HA's. It's been a four year battle with her and her false teeth for the same reason.

Tell her everyone already knows she needs HAs and false teeth but is too stubborn to use them. Tell her she could be a trail blazer - and provide friends with a positive example. They may even follow. Tell her life is too short to spend it worrying about what everyone else thinks.

Usually for women HAs can easily be concealed behind long hair. If she wears short hair that reveals the ears, it may just be a slight hair style change to cover up the ears, which is an easy solution.

I'm not sure I understand not wanting to wear false teeth because that would make people think she still has teeth, no? If she's self conscious about not having teeth left, that is.

How old is your Mother? Lots of folks stress over hearing aids being noticeable but the teeth thing just doesn't make any sense!
