    Default Hearing aids & headphones

    Hi All,

Is it worthwhile to use headphones with HA's? And what about for trying out the aids in the store to see how well they work for music.

I currently have Kirkland KS-5's and listening to an MP3 player on Bose headphones (not noise canceling and not blue tooth) I could hear little difference with or without the aids?

I have an upcoming 2nd appointment at COSTCO and I wonder whether I should try the demo aids with headphones.

I always wear my RIC HAs when using headphones, either with my Bose QuietComfort 30 noise cancelling over the ear headphones or my Plantronics Voyager Focus on-the-ear headset. Because my Plantronics are on-the-ear, I have to tuck my behind the ear HA inside my ear well Attachment 1263 before I put the Plantronics headset on my ears, but it works well and I get no feedback at all.

It makes a HUGE difference to me in terms of clarity when I wear my HAs with the headphones so I'm surprised to hear that it makes little difference to you.

I'm guessing that your loss is fairly flat up to around 2-3KHz so what you're hearing is from 0-2KHz for the most part and if you crank up the volume on the headphones loud enough then you make up for that flat loss so it seems to sound the same to you. But what that means is that your HAs is not amplifying enough on the high ends (3-8KHz) so that's why you could hear little difference in the high ends in the first place with or without the aids.

I use my aids with my headphones, it sounds fantastic. But it depends on the headphones used, and I wear the phones a little bit higher than I used to, so the sound can enter the aid's microphones, too. You will have to find a sweet spot where sounds enters your ears and your aids as well.

I tried the Sony MDR-1000X with my BTE HAs and they worked surprisingly well. I returned them mainly because they made my head sweat. As my loss is rather mild, and I use headphones only when flying, I can just take out the HAs and put in the earbud headphones (Bose QC20i) I already have.

If listening with headphones is a frequent activity, DEFINITELY bring them to Costco and try them on with the trial aids! I always bring my cell phone when trying out new aids - to make sure I can HEAR on the phone once I leave the audi's with my new aids.

I am very happy with the combo of Oticon Opn miniRITE aids and Sennheiser headphones (bought at Amazon.com). I even bought a comfy, sheepskin cushion for the headphone headband, which not only enables me to wear the headphones longer, but also boosts them up just a scant inch on my tiny, child-sized head so they can engage with the *sweet spot* on the Opn aids ... sitting as they do ABOVE the ear and not IN the ear.
